Wedding season is almost upon us, and so the planning begins. But while you concentrate on gift lists and travel arrangements, we’re taking some of the stressful outfit planning away from you by curating your perfect wedding guest fashion guide. Whether you’re headed to a city, destination or country wedding, we’ve got you covered.
Destination weddings
Destination weddings usually involve a hot location, somewhere like the South of France, Italy, Greece, or if you’re lucky, a far flung tropical destination like the Maldives. With that in mind, you’ll want to choose an outfit that is breathable and won’t make you sweat buckets before the bride has even walked down the aisle. For women, think a lightweight slip dress or breezy separates, and for men, light linen suits. If it’s a beach wedding, make sure you pack some flats as well – heels and sand definitely don’t mix.
Country weddings
Countryside weddings are always a popular choice, and luckily they don’t tend to have a strict dress code. They usually involved a ceremony in a local church, followed by breakfast at a pretty manor and drinks in a sprawling English garden. So you might want to invest in a dress that you can wear beyond the wedding, as well as a smart jacket as churches tend to be cold, and also the weather can be unpredictable (not to state the obvious). Shoes with a thicker heel are also preferable as stilettos will sink right into grass. For men, suits don’t have to be too formal, you can even get away with just a shirt and tailored trousers. Ties optional.
City weddings
City weddings, usually held in town halls or fancy hotels, require a slightly smarter dress code, and they’re the perfect occasion to wear heels too as you don’t have to worry about them getting stuck in the grass. We love this & Other Stories floaty dress, this gold Aldo bag and these Next heels. For men, this 3-piece suit is smart, on trend, and can be worn at any number of other occasions, including work dos and christenings.
Black tie weddings
Black tie weddings are becoming more and more popular, as couples splurge to have an extravagant affair to remember. Those kinds of weddings have the strictest dress codes, but once you’ve invested in the right pieces, you will be surprised how many times you’ll be able to wear them again, including fancy work events and Christmas. For women, floor-length gowns are a must, while black or navy suits with white shirts and a tie or bowtie will be expected of men.
Alternative wedding guest outfits
You don’t have to wear a dress to look smart for a wedding. There are plenty of alternative options that are just as elegant. We love this linen waistcoat and trouser set from M&S, or this jumpsuit from H&M. Men needn’t stick to suits either, especially as they can feel quite restrictive. For example, this smart polo top from REISS, paired with these chino trousers from Reserved, is a great choice.
