I visited the club/bar for a friends birthday on 09/02/2018 for the second time and will never be visiting again! My friends and I spent the entire night being pestered and sexually harassed by perverted men. We addressed our concerns to the security on 4 occasions only for them to ignore us. On one occasion a guy persisted to touch my friend and when she asked him to leave her alone, the security laughed and said ''It's a club, What do you expect?''. I then tried to speak to the manager only for him to cut me off mid sentence and walk away. After leaving the club we requested to speak to the manager again, only for security to become increasingly pugnacious, shout at us and tell us to ''f'*ck off and go home''.
Eventually, we spoke to a blonde woman who claimed to be one of the managers. She showed no concern whatsoever despite admitting to receiving similar complaints. She said there was nothing she could do and refused to disclose the full names of senior management.
This bar knowingly employs disrespectful, misogynistic and abusive staff who do absolutely nothing to protect the safety or well being of their female customers. My friends and I are absolutely disgusted and traumatized by our experience and would advise all women to stay well away.
Went here for a friends birthday. Not the first time I had been here. Music was ok and drinks were ok too. Men in the bar were very slimey and persistent with their inappropriate behaviour. When the “security” in the bar were told about this they proceeded to say “it’s a club what do you expect”. Absolutely disgusting that as a group of women we were made to feel like being harassed and touched up by thirsty men was acceptable. Security witnessed and did nothing. Even tried to speak to their manager CRAIG who put his hand in my friends face and walked away. We explained the situation to another security guy and asked him “is it not down to you to make your guests feel secure?” To which he responded “no, that’s not my job!” Whole situation was absolutely traumatising and horrific and we were especially disappointed with the blonde lady who claimed she was also a “manager” who did not look the slightest bit shocked or worried that her customers had experienced this. She literally point blank told us there’s nothing I can do. She even said it was not the first time someone had complained about the security and it has happened on many previous occasions which had me completely dumbfounded. Will never EVER go back to this place after this eye opening experience.
I must say market place was a random discovery by myself and a group of my friends , good music , chilled vibe and a good space in general .
Staff friendly and polite , doormen very respectful ( rare I know ) , I would love to say I’d happily recommend it to any body , but after last nights events I’m sad to say if you are black or of mixed origin it’s highly unlikely they will allow you in .
The same group of friends and myself, approached the queue , there were a few people ahead of us , the man with the clip board ,( let’s call this person “ Mr clipboard “) , leaned over to the doorman and whispered something , the doorman then approaches the group and calmly says :
“ Guys it’s ublikey you will get in with out girls tonight “
Which we fully understood, so the 4 of us Black young males ( Handsome males , might I add 😎)
Ride off into the sunset and come back with 6 females , and approach the same queue , this time we have met the requirements to atleast gain admission into this fine establishment, atleast so we think .
MR Clipboard , then leans toward the doorman and whispers ( as he does ) ,
The doorman approaches this even bigger group of four black handsome males (😎) and 6 females of mixed origin , surely , we’re getting in now !!
the doorman approaches us and sheepishly says :
“SORRY GUYS ITS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN TONITE “
As this fine gentleman is delivering the message of MR CLIPBOARD , a group of CAUCASIAN gentlemen are being allowed in , with no females in theyre entourage , this isn’t a particular night , no guest lists , nothing..
Not screaming out RACISM and neither will i say that famous term “ IT WAS BECAUSE WE WERE BLACK “, wouldn’t dare say that .
It just seemed to me , that we weren’t of some requirements that night , maybe we wearing the wrong COLOURS , who knows .
Moral of this story is that PHO do amazing wings !!
Exactly you’re thinking “what the hell , how does that even have any relevance to this story “
It doesn’t , “ what the hell “was my mind state
Utter shock and embarrassment that in 2018 this is a done thing , I suppose the spirit Distrkt
Is still alive !
I used to actually like Market Place until yesterday 2/2/2018, me and my friends (We’re a mixed group of coloured guys) have been regulars at market place enough for security to recognise us and we’d kindly exchange words and so on, because we’re just a bunch of chilled out, layed back guys. Everything was good there was never no bad energy or negative vibes we’d been refused entry once before for wearing our joggers and we just took it on the chin because it was a new rule we just had to accept.
Last night there was a celebration going on with one of our colleagues and we told her we’d meet her inside as she was going to get there before us. But anyways we was refused entry and was told it’s “mixed groups only” and at the time we were a group of four guys, meaning boys must come with girls. Prior to all that we had left a group of our girl friends to come here and celebrate. We decided to call those same girls and told them our situation and they was happy to help regarding the mixed group thing.
Now we’re a group of 3 black males, 1 mixed race male, 1 gay white male, 4 mixed race females, 1 white female and 1 black female.
Our group has now more than doubled in size and the ratio is 6:5.
Can someone please tell me why we were still refused entry?
There can only be one answer “because we’re black” I know this because while being told to get out of the line with our mixed group, another mixed group of white males and females are being let in right infront of us.
Now I know what you’re thinking, there're a load of variables that could of gone against us that night other than the colour of our skin, like drunk and disorderly behaviour or not meeting the dress requirements. Well our approach to the que was quiet and calm and we were most definitely all dressed appropriately because our friends who was already inside were dressed like us and had only arrived 15 minutes before us.
All fingers point to one thing the cliche but not so cliche “Because I’m Black”
Thanks for reading.
I’m giving it a 3/5 just because it has room for improvement. Service was alright, not bad but not great, poached egg was slightly over cooked. It’s a great spot and would love to see it becoming a hot spot in London.
