Just like the song says if you're good to mama, mama's good to you, and boy is this mama going to be good to you. Sylvia left the Deep South and has roosted in the heart of Soho to give London's poultry loving boys and girls just what they need. Serving up the best 3 way chicken, rotisserie, pulled & buttermilk dipped, with a side of R&B, a hefty portion of soul and laugh that makes the other chicks blush, Ma' Plucker is going to be your number one chicken stop.
So much hype and what a let down it was! I ordered a takeaway chicken salad. The chicken was great, salad looked like it had froze in the fridge and then had been used again. The leaves were going off, there was no crunchiness to them whatsoever and their portions of chicken were child like. I finished the salad and was left hungry. I feel as though they size down the portions for takeaways. Overpriced for the amount that you get.
We were driven in the restaurant by curiosity and it did not pay off unfortunately. Our orders took half an hour to come, even the tap water we ordered only came because we asked for it after 20 minutes of waiting. It around 8.30pm on a Friday, while the restaurant was small and only 70% full so can't see why it should be slow. The food was mediocre at most, similar to my semi successful attempts at a new reception, the chicken was although moisture but boring flavour, the salad dressing tasted deciding similar to a store bought bottle of sweet French dressing. The toilet is poorly lit and was out of tissue paper, but hot water. The lack of popularity if the restaurant was also sensed when we were handed a loyalty card with 5 out of 6 slots already stamped, presumably in an attempt to attract us back for 6 free chicken wings. I can't see how even that gave us any incentive to come back!
We went for a friend's birthday meal out to Ma' Plucker. The venue was quiet (mid-week) and the staff weren't terribly busy. That said, service was poor. Our main waiter was friendly, but took ages to bring our drinks order. Our food order took around 45 minutes to arrive and the waiter who brought the food was rude and stand-offish with no apology given for the wait. It simply doesn't take that long to prepare that kind of food.
The food itself was mediocre - the pulled chicken dish arrived cold, a friends half chicken was dry. I had a chicken burger - supposed to be buttermilk battered but was not. Served in the kind of bog-standard burger bun that you can buy 6 of for £1 in Asda. Friends side salad looked distinctly as though it had come from a bagged supermarket salad - looked dry and unappealing. Very small portions of chips for nearly £4, corn on the cob for £4.
All in all, overpriced and terribly mediocre. We didn't kick up a fuss at the restaurant as it was a birthday meal and it wasn't the time or place. That said, if you're only going to offer three or four things on the menu, the food needs to be much better, or at least value for money - this just isn't the case and I wouldn't waste your time or money there. There are much better places to eat out in Soho.
For central its a good place to visit.
Menu was simple.
Chicken was amazing, sauces were good. The location was good. The food itself was good. The only thing holding back from a 5* review was the burger roll was dry a bit. "
Had the rotisserie chicken. Very nice tender meat. Not massive flavour but was nice
