Balans Soho located on Old Compton Street is a local institution renowned for two things. Firstly the food, modern British featuring a wide ranging menu that includes small dishes, large dishes and sides featuring fish, salads, steak, breakfast options and pasta. The food served is truly tasty with the portion sizes slightly larger than normal. The "Eggs in Hell" - 2 eggs poached in a tomato chilli sauce, parmesan and potatoes - and Cornish Crab Linguine, are outstanding. The drinks menu is special as well, featuring classic cocktails and wine as well as home based cocktails including the "Porn Star" which combines vodka, vanilla, passion fruit with a champagne shot.

Secondly, the around the clock 24-hour service. Balans Soho serves alcohol until 3am every day other than Sundays, (when the time is 12.30am). Balans Soho offers standard tables and booths at the front and the back of restaurant providing different options. As expected the crowd will vary depending on the time of the day. Friday and Saturday nights can get busy but early morning is chilled and relaxed.

Having been to Balans Soho three times in the past month for breakfast and lunch I must add a third feature to the previously mentioned food and opening hour. Consistent friendly service. The entire staff from the waiters to the bar staff have a gracious, service oriented attitude, making everybody feel very welcome.

One of my favourite places to hang out be it for a glass of wine or for a light snack. It is great to have conversation with friends and I do enjoy the ambience. Don't forget to check out the little matchbox in their trays.

Expensive prices and food quality has gone downhill. I only give it three stars because our Romanian waiter was attentive and super polite. Otherwise, it would fare much worse.

Always find this place relaxed, friendly and efficient. Menu well-judged, not too long and varied. Food nearly always very good. My favourite C London café.
